History
Rita Murphy Elementary School, named after a highly regarded English teacher in the Bismarck Public Schools, opened in September of 1969 with an enrollment of approximately 150 students. Since that time, the district has built three major additions, including one of the largest elementary gymnasiums in the city. In 2007 we finished the last of the three construction projects. It includes eight regular classrooms, several specialist areas, a Library media center, a music room, and a multipurpose area and kitchen. The school now houses four to six classrooms at each grade level.
Rita Murphy school has continued to grow at a steady rate for the past several years. It has the largest elementary enrollment area in Bismarck and includes one of the fastest growing development areas. Our student base is made up of neighborhood children as well as those from rural areas to the east and north of the city of Bismarck. Currently the enrollment stands at approximately 710 students in grades K-6. We feed around 150 children every day in our breakfast program, and about 620 children a day at lunch. We currently use nine buses and six day care vans to transport our students.
We have a dedicated faculty of classroom teachers as well as specialists in the areas of reading, learning disabilities, physical education, vocal and instrumental music, library media, gifted and talented, art, mentally handicapped, speech/language pathology and counseling. The teaching staff consists of forty nine highly qualified professional educators. 80% of them have Bachelors of Science Degrees in Elementary Education and the other 20% of them have a Masters Degrees in a variety of Educational fields. The school also has reading teachers who assist the classroom teachers with reading instruction. In addition the school has a full time gifted education teacher, a full time counselor, and a full time Librarian.
A loyal support staff, made up of secretaries, custodians, a library aide, cooks, playground supervisors, a nurse, and classroom aides help our school run smoothly.
Murphy's data includes student grades, test results, a handbook, an Improvement Plan, News Letters, and a Calendar of Events. All items can be found on line, and we encourage parents to use the schools web page to stay informed.
